Long Time Player Re-enters the Game
After sitting in the background these past few years in the race for the best mp3 player, the company that first introduced the world to portable music is getting into the game and has shown up with a pretty decent player. Sony made the name “Walkman” common in the 1980’s. In fact, I remember when all of the other companies followed suit they were all referred to as Walkmans, even though this was the name Sony had come up with first. With the AM/FM radio and cassette player at our hips, who knew we were on the beginning stages of iPods and mp3 players? With Apple cornering the market on portable audio and video players, Sony’s answer seems like a great little device; however, I think it falls short to the competition.
The Sony Walkman NWZ-A829 is an audio/video player that supports multiple formats, offers high resolution video on a 2.4″ LCD screen, and comes with the great sound we expect from one of the leaders in consumer technology. With the ability to go wireless via Bluetooth technology, it brings with it great comfort in knowing that you will not be bogged down by a cord. Personally, my iPod cord always catches on my shirt, popping the earbud from my ear whenever I turn my head or start cranking up my workout. However, even with the freedom that the Bluetooth capability can offer, this player still seems like David taking on Goliath.
While Sony’s 16GB Walkman holds up to 3,800 songs and/or up to 62 hours of video, I felt that it doesn’t stand up to Apple’s 80GB and 160GB versions. Don’t get me wrong, however, this baby packs in more audio and video that one could possibly take in and has an incredible battery life of 36 hours for audio and 10 hours for video. It is a better-than-decent mp3/video player, and it is small enough to fit in your pocket. I would definitely check it out, but would not commit to buying one until they come out with a larger capacity player, which I am sure is already being developed. I wouldn’t want to get stuck with a collection like I have iPods: the 4GB iPod mini, the 30GB iPod classic with video, the 4GB nano, the 80GB improvement, and so on. Heck, I still have my Sony AM/FM (no cassette) Walkman. Maybe I should start my own museum exhibit? On second thought, thank God for eBay!
