CEIVA…It’s More Than Just a Picture Frame.

Published by cjmullin at 2:44 am under Electronics, Miscellaneous, Uncategorized

When the world officially went with digital over 35mm film prints, it has sort of left a few once popular items out in the cold. Rolls of film took the direct hit, followed by the cameras that used them. But even other items have changed with the times. One hour photo shops that once produced prints of your pictures from a roll of film now can do the same thing from a memory card in half the time. And over the past couple of years, even picture frames have gone digital to meet the demand of showing off your electronic images. These are a pretty cool invention, because it gives you the ability to offer slide shows in one single frame, pulling them right off the memory card. The frames are really starting to kick off now, and come in all shapes and sizes. You can hang them on your wall, or plop them on your desk. They have also started to come down in price, which is why I am guessing they are making more headlines these days in the weekly sales flyers. While most of them seem pretty straight forward (you plug in the memory stick, upload the photos and play away until the batteries run out or your electric bill skyrockets), I have seen few that are beginning to offer a bit more for your buck. Take, for example, the CEVIA brand of digital frames. This is the first time I have seen this, but I can guarantee it will not be the last.

First, the most appealing thing I found is the fact that you can sign up for a service called PicturePlan, which allows you to upload photos to your frame without even using a memory card. You don’t even need to plug the camera in, all you do is send your images wirelessly through your account. Or how about this: you give the frame as a gift to your elderly grandparents, and then send them the photos to be displayed, making it so much easier than explaiing how to go about downloading, uploading, and memory cards. With the activated account, the frame dials up every evening, and pulls off the new photos you set to be uploaded. Such a simple concept, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it! But what I found even more impressive is the fact that you can also get news feeds, sports scores and highlights, and even the weather forecast from the same screen. How great is that? One second you see little Jimmy eating grass that first time you took the training wheels off, and then the Yankees score, and then the latest headlines. And what better on a Friday afternoon, sitting at your desk waiting for the clock to pass, as you easily catch the weekend forecast without having to go to any websites on your computer. In fact, this frame operates fully without having to interact with a computer at all.

There are so many other great things these frames offer, but I think I hit the big ones. If you want to check it out further, go here. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It makes a perfect gift for Father’s Day too (hint, hint).

While the new Ceiva frames have some unique features, after extensive product testing of both Ceiva and other competitors’ frames, Which Frame? has identified Ceiva as one of the digital picture frame brands to avoid.

While the frame itself is fine, taking advantage of the wireless capabilities is almost a nightmare. Ceiva advertises all of the wireless functions; however, once you purchase the frame, you find out you need a wireless or broadband adapter for another $40. Then, once you get that, you find out that you can sign up for a free account on Ceiva’s website. The account is free, but Picture Plan costs extra, and the account is completely useless withouth Picture Plan which costs up to $159.95 per year or $15.95 per month. There are tricks around every turn it seems with Ceiva’s frames. The box advertises 3 free months with Picture Plan, but when you try to sign up, it only offers 1.5 months and requires your credit card information for billing purposes.

Which Frame? recommends Kodak as the best brand in digital picture frames with respect to quality, ease-of-use and reliability. Please visit http://www.whichframe.com for more information.
