We all know that you can’t talk on your cell phone anymore while driving, right? And in New York, they just passed a law stating you cannot text message while driving, either. Shouldn’t have this come before the talking law? Well, we can save that discussion for another time. Anywho, Microsoft has a product out there that aims to bring all of your electronic gadgets together to work in unison while you sit at the wheel.

Microsoft Sync can be used to fully integrate your phone and music player, giving you the most functional system around. Want to be able to voice command all of your phone calls, as well as any other feature you may get with your cell? Go for it. How about controlling your playlists with a few spoken words? Now you can. The Microsoft Sync comes as an available option on most Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models, and woks with virtually any phone with Bluetooth connectivity. You can also dock your audio devices, allowing it to stay charged via the USB port while you tell it what you want to play. You will never need to use your hands again, which means less distractions on the road.

Now, two new features are becoming available this fall that will practically put this as the must-have vehicle option (beating OnStar in the process). First, you will soon be able to have a direct connection to emergency services with 911 Assist, which contacts 911 through your BLuetooth connected cell phone when an accident occurs. Second, users will have the option to run diagnostic reports on their own vehicle, in order to keep your car running healthy and away from the auto garages.

With something as good as this, it makes you wish you drove a Ford. I couldn’t find anything relating to the availability for other makes and models somewhere in the future, so for now if you don’t have a compatible car, you are out of luck. If you want to find out more about this really cool tool to keep you and your car connected, go here. And then when you really want one bad enough, keep it in mind the next time you go car shopping.

You all know about those black boxes were hear about whenever an airplane mysteriously crashes, right? Well, this little recorder serves a similar purpose, with a few extras. The Vehicle Safeguard Video Recording Camera easily mounts onto your dashboard, and faces out the windshield, taking in every bit of video as you see it from the driver’s seat. This is great for a few reasons. First, say you were in an accident and when the police arrive on the scene you are too groggy or even unconscious to tell them what happened. All they would need to do is watch the playback of the dashboard video to get a clearer picture of how you ended up in the mess. From the recording they should be able to tell if you were blindsided by another motorist, or if the roads were too icy and/or snowy and you slid off into a ditch, or it can even point out the fact that maybe you were the root cause of the accident. The latter would not be to your benefit, but you have to take some responsibility, right? Police officers all over the country currently have similar devices, and you will see those “caught on tape” shows exploiting the technology sometimes. But overall, they are there for public safety, and that’s what counts.

A little added bonus with this product is that you can record some of those beautiful scenic road trips, capturing all of the colors of the autumn trees, or the coastline of a summer trip. Watch it later with your family to relive the event, or bring it to a friend’s house and show them how beautiful a Sunday drive can be.

The camera is powered by either a 12 volt DC plug or 4 AAA batteries. Your best bet is the cigarette lighter, especially if this runs through batteries as fast as a digital camera. You have the option of recording from 128MB to 2GB with the expansion slot, so it looks like you would have to invest in a memory stick. The good part is it uses an SD card, which is commonly compatible with other digital recorders and cameras. The video is recorded in AVI format and is easy to download and share on your computer.

Will this make the world a safer place for drivers? No. But what it will do is allow for a more thorough police report, which is to your benefit if you were not the one causing the accident. It will put an end to the finger pointing, at least. And who needs that headache after getting t-boned on a busy intersection?

This autmotive gadget is a life saver, literally. Every morning, when I back out of the garage for work, I take my kids’ lives in my hands. Especially during school season, when they are waiting so patiently for the bus in front of our house. Some mornings I oversleep and tend to tear out of the driveway, half asleep depending on if I got my cup of joe or not. To make matters worse, I drive a huge gas guzzling SUV, so it is really difficult at times to keep an eye on the kids, and ensure they aren’t behind me on the way out. That is where this wireless Automotive Video Parking Sensor comes into play. I know, it is made for safe parking, which is also a handy feature as I have to park in a large parking garage downtown every morning. My rear bumper would love me if I bought one of these. But I find the safety of not barreling over someone as I back up a little more valueable. And it is simple to set up. The sensor/camera is made to fit as a license plate bracket. A video screen receiver pops onto your dashboard similar to the after market GPS devices. That’s it! No wires to run through the car, and no hefty installation fees to pay. When you back up, as you get within three feet of an object the sensors will beep, and will get faster and faster as you get closer, letting you know you are about to smack into something. And the video screen will give you a a great, clear view of what’s behind you to catch those fast moving children or household pets. Keep everyone safe, your car from being damaged, and yourself off the 6 o’clock news. I mean, who wants to be the neighborhood wacko who reported finding his pal Fido under the rear of the vehicle? Or even worse, their own child! And it is so cheap compared to those factory installed models, you will want to get one for every car you have in the driveway. The only thing missing is the automobile insurance discount, which you may want to check on with your insurance agent.

In this day and age, our automobiles are starting to be equipped with some handy little bells and whistles. I have been scouting the new car market for the past few months now, and it amazes me what factory options are now available. And they aren’t all luxury-only models that you can add them to. I have seen cars that can tell you when you are in range of a Wi-Fi hotspot, synch up with your audio player, and even email you a maintenance log every week. And I used to think the pop-out overhead maplight was cool when I was a kid. Or power windows. Well, while these new additions are highly useful for anyone who gets into a car, I couldn’t help but notice a nice option entering the European market that has its eyes on the US of A in the near future.

Vauxhall Motors has implemented a little gadget called the Speed Limit Detector. It is a little camera that takes up to thirty shots per second of the road ahead of you. Each snapshot captures all nearby road signs, which are then analyzed with image recognition software. The end result is amazing. It feeds the speed limit into a display on your dashboard, which pops up conveniently next to your speedometer allowing you to really see how fast you are going. Now, I don’t know how many times I have been traveling down good ol’ county route in-the-middle-of-nowhere, with no idea of what the speed limit is. And I would look for roadsigns if I didn’t have to worry about avoiding loose cattle or avoiding a ditch. I don’t really want to be pulled over in some backwoods town by some hillbilly sheriff if I can avoid it.

Driving around while armed with this little mechanism will give me the comfort I have been looking for. I am sure I will still speed whenever possible, because I just prefer getting places four minutes faster, but at least I will never have to wonder what the posted limits are. I suppose I could also use it to stay just under the amount over the limit to avoid getting more than 5 points on my license. I am sure this was not the manufacturer’s intentions, though.

We’ve all had those nights in the bar where you sit for a few brews, and then a couple of hours later you get up to go to the bathroom…only to find out you had drank enough beer to turn your legs into jello. If you are fortunate enough to have a few good friends that you go out with, they would never let you walk by yourself to the bathroom, let alone get behind the wheel of a car. And quite possibly you may already have desiganted a driver that has had nothing more than a soda or two. But what about those off nights when you stop by yourself, without the assistance and care of a buddy to take your keys and say “Hey man, not tonight.” And you may only have a few drinks, and are not quite sure if you would pass a breathalizer should the 5-O pull you over. For those moments, the AlcoHawk is the perfect little device.

The AlcoHawk uses similar technology to that of the police version. The mouthpiece unfolds, allowing you to give a good breath into the very accurate oxide sensor, showing your blood alcohol content on the LED monitor on the front. There is also a pressure monitor to help ensure accuracy when capturing your sample of hot air. It is so small you can easily hide it in your pocket, or dangle it from your keychain to remind yourself to blow into it before trying to fidget the key into the ignition. Of course, if it takes you long enough to even get the key inserted, you may not even need to bother blowing into the AlcoHawk to figure out you are too drunk to drive. All it takes is five seconds of your night to know how drunk you are. And with a detection range from .00 to .40 BAC, you will get a great sense of where you stand.

Using this whenever you want to monitor your drinking will let you know when you have had too much. Perfect for a night out alone when you just want to relax with a few cocktails, or on that business lunch where you don’t want to crack up the company’s fleet vehicle on your way back to the office. Just remember, always drink responsibly, and if you have had more than enough to question your own judgement, then it’s not safe enough to sit behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.

I think by now everyone has used or have ridden in a car that has a GPS system of some shape or form. Whether it is either the suction cup after market add-on or the fancy pants in-dash model, they all serve the same purpose; to get us to our destination. I have never personally driven with the assistance of one of these, but my in-laws do it all the time. And while I have been in the market for one for over a year now, I just can’t fathom being able to pay attention to the on-screen directions while trying to watch where I am going. Call me crazy, but multi-tasking in that form is a bit difficult. I think when it comes down to it, I would just end up crashing into a tree trying to drive down the road. I know they have voice directions, but I am old fashioned and need to visualilze it on a map.

So what do the makers of such devices do? They come out with something to be even more confusing for the road traveler that I am. This rearview mirror by Schenzhen MCD Electronics is anything but standard. To start things off, it has a 3.5″ LCD screen on the side, which provides all the functions you expect out of a GPS navigator. Now this is a good idea, because I find that looking towards the rearview mirror is more natural then the dashboard. It would not be such a crazy idea, except they had to keep piling on the options. The rear sensors are great to notify you that you are about to back into a trash can, the house, or the neighbor’s kid. But now you can pop in your SD memory card and download MP3’s. What happened to the radio? And your photos. Now, when I am driving, I never usually have the time to flip through some good pictures, but I guess I am the oddball. You can also watch videos, read e-books, play games with the included stylus pen, and interact with your Bluetooth devices. I think they forgot to include the driver so you can sit and use all of the features while on a road trip.

I wouldn’t last five minutes trying to drive with this thing. Of course, I say that but we as a culture get used to these things in about 2 days. I just tend to be very skeptical. It is an awesome price at $145, so I feel that they will fly off the shelves. I just will have to wait before I test drive it. In theory, this gadget rocks. However, I think we are going to see a lot more road accidents when these start hitting the cars. Better boost up your no-fault coverage.

With all of the storms raging across the country lately, the power companies are working overtime trying to restore electric to the millions of homes that have lost it during the floods, tornadoes, and severe thunder storms. Judging by the activity this early in the season, plan on a wet summer. While it is potentially a meteorologists’ fantasy, I for one do not like the idea of being without power. It gets nerve racking, especially with the kids being upset at the same time. You know how they can get when their video games are not available. Or the computer for my oldest daughter. It’s like their life line was pulled and they start gasping for air. Generators work great, but with gas prices through the roof, who can afford to run them for the longer outages? I can’t even afford to drive to work nowadays! Batteries never last very long, either. So rather than sitting in the dark with a candle trying to figure out what is going on, you can always turn to the crank powered alternatives.

Many of you have probably seen the crank flashlights; the LED lamp powered by the spin of the crank rather than traditional batteries. The Eton Grundig FR300 AM/FM radio uses the same idea, but gives you so much more to go with it. First, it is an AM/FM radio, receiving news broadcasts to advise you of what to do in case you are stuck in a real emergency. It also pulls in the NOAA weather channels, giving you the latest weather advisories so you know what to expect during the outage and where to go in case you need to evacuate. VHF frequencies can also be received, so you can still catch that season finale of your favorite TV show, at least the audio anyways (you will soon know what grandma used to do for entertainment). And finally, you can get cell phone power restored so you can keep in communication with family and friends, letting them know you are still alive. That’s a lot of stuff in one little box. All you have to do is crank the lever for 90 seconds, and get nearly 15 minutes of juice. This would really come in handy for all types of emergencies. Keep it in the car incase you ever get stranded, and leave it at home when staying in. I wouldn’t go anywhere without this by my side.

Better get your arms in shape, though, because you may end up doing a lot of cranking. Ninety seconds may not sound long, but after second 47 you will be wishing you were done. And once the little ones know you have an unending power source, you will be cranked out before you know it trying to keep their favorite songs going on the radio. That being said, it is always important to have up to date information at such delicate times, especially in this day and age. Therefore, I see this as a no brainer. They should make it mandatory that each household get one of these instead of worrying about HDTV cable transmission. Which one is going to work for you in a power outage?

If you are like me, you probably think that traditional bumper stickers are tacky. After a few days of planting the adhesive wonder onto the body of your car, you may tend to get that moment of regret, and then find yourself in the garage at 2:00 am with a bottle of Goo-be-gone and a sponge. Besides, what you feel like expressing today may not be your thoughts for tomorrow, so why make a commitment such as stating you are anit-meat, or that crap happens (I am trying to keep it clean here). Maybe your honor student one semester will flunk out the following term, then what do you do? Well, I can tell you this. This license plate holder is the best option for those who still need to let the guy behind them know where they are at, but don’t want to drive around in a home-made billboard.

You can store up to five messages, each with a total of 120 characters, to let you make the statement you want without having to cut yourself short. All you do is wire it to your car, enter the messages with the remote control, and go crazy! With three scroll speeds, you can keep it quick, or slow it down for the elder folk on those Sunday drives. The bright blue LED light makes it easy to see no matter what time of day it is. It is constructed with aluminum alloy, preventing it from rusting out. It will also look good with any make, model and color. Come on, anything is better than that cheesy plastic dealership advertisement that you drive off the lot with.

I like this product a lot. There are only two issues that may come into play: one is easy to deal with and one may be the end of your electronic road rage. First, the wiring may tend to get a little difficult, as it must run off a standard 12-volt DC and be hardwired to your car’s electronics. Not everyone is electrical savy, so simply take it to a professional and get hooked up in no time. Second, before you make this purchase, check with your state’s DMV regulations, to see if this is allowed where you live. For the most part, I can’t see any troubles, but you don’t want to get stuck with something this cool and not be able to use it.

I do a lot of road travel for work, and I am currently in the market for a quality GPS navigation system. I am looking for a better-than-decent model, while at the same time spending as little as possible. Factory installed options are out the window, for they cost well over $1,000 and I can’t part with that much money for something that sits in my car. The suction cup editions are very handy, more affordable, and are great for families with more than one vehicle; however, finding a good one is the biggest battle. I don’t want to be stuck with a dashboard ornament after shelling out a couple hundred bucks. Fortunately, there is quite a selection out there. Hewlett Packard, a name I love and trust for all of my electronic machines, has just come out with the HP iPAQ rx5900 Travel Companion that may be the current winner for those in the market for some satellite navigation.

What’s great about this device is that it is a fully functional GPS navigation unit, in addition to a hand-held device equipped with Windows Mobile 5.0 and Microsoft Office applications. Carry your presentations, important work documents, emails, business contacts, schedules, photos, music, and more in the same little pocket-sized device that will get you all around town and guide you where to go. With the car installation kit (which is included with your purchase, believe it or not) it easily attaches to your car as a GPS system, so you aren’t stuck holding it while driving like the GPS features that come with today’s cell phones. It gets so frustrating trying to pay attention to the directions on a 1″ cell phone screen and abysmal speaker sound, which by the way occupies one of the two hands required for driving. Try pulling that one off in a standard transmission vehicle.

Armed with both 802.11 b/g wireless LAN and Bluetooth v2.0 connectivity, you can pull in any wireless signal you happen to be located in and access the internet. You could almost guarantee you will never be stranded with this electronic companion at your side (of course, with GPS navigation, you should never get stranded anyways). It also comes pre-loaded with TomTom Navigator 6 navigation software with full maps for all of the USA and Canada. This baby’s ready right out of the box. All you need is to plug it in and have somewhere to go.

In regards to the GPS market today, its not exactly “priced right” at nearly $500. However, look at the additional features you are getting. It basically serves as a Blackberry or Palm Treo without the phone functionality. It has a generous 2GB of flash memory, 64MB of RAM, and a mini USB port. Its like having a tiny pocket-sized computer. That alone would cost you nearly as much, so that’s why I think this is one of the best GPS systems out there. I have always had great experience with HP printers and computers, so I am going to give them a fair shot and take the plunge. If you are a road warrior with an on-the-go office like me, maybe you should too.

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, I decided this year to begin my online browsing for a gift for my lovely wife from the kids a little earlier. After weeding through several web pages offering something “different” for moms this year, I came to the realization that the marketplace for Mother’s Day is beginning to look very eerily similar to Father’s Day, offering crazy gizmos and gadgets as an alternative to neckties and flowers. Most of what I saw would not only be considered tacky by most, but would disappoint my wife more than if she received a vacuum as a reward for bringing five children into this world. However, I did manage to come across something that would be very useful given our current situation. At least it seems useful in my head.

We have an older vehicle that doesn’t like to start in the rainy weather. Mind you, some may consider it a junker, but who could turn down a free 1988 Ford Escort with only fifty thousand miles on it? With the way gas prices have been, it has become the run-around-town vehicle of choice. Both my wife and I have been stranded several times in the pouring rain on the side of the road trying to solicit a passer-by to offer their engine for a jump start. This always turns out to be a very miserable situation, and thankfully it is not the family car and the kids normally do not have to suffer. Anyways, in this day and age not everyone is so helpful, and I often travel for work and am not always available to come to her rescue. Hence, I believe my wife will be receiving a Porta-Jump Emergency Car Jumpstarter as thanks for being a mom this year.

Sure, it is a mouthful to say, but this unbelievable jumpstarter is small enough to fit in your glovebox. It simply charges your battery through the 12-volt cigarette lighter socket, giving your engine enough umphh to turn over and get you back on the road. It requires absolutely no cables, no standing out in the rain trying to flag down unhelpful motorists, and the best thing is it can be used over and over unlike those emergency battery chargers that are typically a one-time deal. And all of this for the great price of $24.95, how can you go wrong?

Short of sounding like an infomercial, you should go visit their website (http://www.porta-jump.com) for this great little gadget and their special offers. I have also included their video presentation below. Of course, my talking this product up is only based upon my observations at the moment. I am sure my wife will love opening this baby up during her Mother’s Day breakfast, and I will have an experience-based opinion in a few short weeks. Until then, guys, you may want to consider this little guy as your big present this year. However, be prepared to stock the couch with an extra pillow and blankets just in case.
