I have had several moments in my life where I have “almost” forgot my cell phone. Bars, restaurants, even rides at Disney World, have all played a temporary home to my cell phone. I have made the trip the following morning to claim my phone, and amazingly enough I have yet to experience a time where it couldn’t be found. But my time is due.

For those of us who are forgetful when it comes to our cellular buddy, there is the BlueAlert Bluetooth bracelet to save us from that temporary loss. Not only does this bracelet sync up to your Bluetooth capable phone, alerting you to every phone call (just in case you are like me and can never feel the vibrations when the ringer is off), but it signals you whenever you travel more than 5 meters away from your cell. Talk about multi-functional. Nothing fancy, this plain and simple bracelet can be a very useful tool in saving your life, especially if you are one that depends highly on their cellular device.

It may look corny to wear around your wrist, but trust me it will be worth the clash in wardrobe. And with an increasing number of gadgets connecting with Bluetooth technology lately, it may b more handy than you think.

OK, all you hard core PS3 gamers out there. With the new games that are out on the market requiring headsets to live all of the action, a new Bluetooth earpiece is being released that is so much better than the traditional headsets. Most notably used for games such as SOCOM, you can get into the gaming world by talking with other on-line gamers and using voice-activated commands. Of course, in years past you had to don clunky ear phones with a microphone bar attached, sticking out in your face. So Sony has gotten wise and is using the same Bluetooth technology for cell phones and bringing it to the home video game system.

This headset just fits in one ear, making it noticeably more comfortable. And with it, you get a High Quality Mode that offers noise cancellation to ensure your voice commands are heard clearly. You also get an in-game status display, showing your connectivity, battery meter and speaker level. Finally, you can dock the headset to charge and still use it as a microphone so you don’t have to take a break in the action.

Now I used to be a video gamer, way back when Mario was born, but being a dad takes away my gaming time. Besides, the kids have it most of the day anyway. But it is nice to see that technology used in everyday communication has finally making its way to the video game systems. And it not only provides comfort, but also integrates a variety of technological advances for multiple purposes. And that’s important in ensuring our children of today will grow up with the times.

I was looking for a decent wireless earpiece for my cell phone the other day, and I came across some interesting looking devices I must say. I always see people in the street, at the store, at baseball games, driving down the highway, all wearing some sort of headset that enables them to participate in hands-free conversation on their cell phones. This is good, especially since they outlawed talking while driving in New York State. I am not all too heartbroken by that law, because I drive a stick and it was hard driving while talking anyway. Although I do like the practicality of the earpiece, and find it more and more necessary as I move up in my career (I must be getting so important that they need to bother me on the phone all the time), I really am not a big fan of the standard black/silver combo with the obvious blue light sticking out of my ear. It’s almost as if it screams out “Hey, look at me, I am Bluetooth equipped!”

Anyways, I saw a nice line of Bluetooth enabled earpieces called the Jawbone, and I tell you they look pretty darn sharp. Nice and stylish, sleek, smooth, and that isn’t even its most attractive feature. Along with the superior Bluetooth connectivity to synch up to nearly any cell phone this side of 2005, it has a Voice Activity Sensor, which allows it to detect when a person is speaking to produce crystal clear and very accurate sound. There is also a noise eliminating technology called NoiseAssasin, that helps reduce all of the outside or background noise, ensuring that your conversations are heard on both ends. This would be great for making calls from the car or a large public area such as a mall or convention center. I have irritated my wife more than not when I call her from business trips and can’t even hear her because of the background noise. After answering the kids and repeating herself all day, she really hates it when I ask her to do the same from a phone several hundred miles away.

For total comfort, superior sound quality, and advanced technology, I would rate this as one of the best cell phone accessories around. Great for business or pleasure, you will surely look good when you talk on this bad boy. It is available in a few different styles, so get a few to go with different wardrobes. And with the amazing sound clarity, the person on the other end will definitely thank you.

I am not a fan of text messages. My thirteen year old daughter chooses this as her main source of communication. One day, I actually saw on the bill she had over 1,000 text messages, and yet zero talk minutes. I asked her “You do realize it’s a phone, right?” For me, I hate having to hit the same keys over and over to cycle through the available letters, just to say something that would take two seconds of a phone call. For those of you who have Palm Treos or Blackberries with the QWERTY keys so small you hit three at a time until you get used to it, you always hear about thumb cramps from all the texting that goes on month to month. I honestly think they call it “Blackberry Thumb”, or something like that. I say let’s stop all the texting and treat the phone like a phone. But, for those of you who can’t give up your addiction, I believe this new cell phone accessory will keep your thumbs nice and rested.

The Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard hooks up wireless via, yep you guessed it, Bluetooth technology to your cell phone. What it does is projects a useable keyboard onto any flat surface, giving you an image of all 63 keys in QWERTY fashion. The keyboard sensor reads what keys you are striking, and enters them into your PDA or cell phone, giving you the freedom to test the limits of how many characters you can really send. The keyboard is projected in standard full size, and has a battery life to withstand roughly 120 minutes of continuous typing, so go nuts! It even gives you a simulated clicking sound, so you won’t feel too awkward tapping your desk to write a message. The device itself is only 3.5 inches tall, and will fit in your pocket or briefcase with ease. For a full sheet of specs and compatibility with Bluetooth devices, you can access this info sheet for more details.

I think it is a pretty neat looking device, and it definitely has a useful purpose for those mega-texters out there. As far as futuristic gadgets go, this is definitely something out of a 1980’s sci-fi movie. People will definitely want to see what’s going on in the coffee lounge downtown when you have to reply to an email on your phone. You are just stuck if you’re not in front of or near a flat surface. I would NOT recommend this while driving a car, but you know some addicts will try it anyways. Especially those with the longer dahsboards. Just think of all the thumbs cheering with this fully functional, full sized savior. Now I bet we will see an even higher increase in carpal tunnel syndrome.

When I hear the term “retro”, I tend to have mixed feelings depending on the style they are referring to. For fashion, my stomach turns at the thought of bellbottom pants, french-rolled jeans and the “Madonna” look. However, when the music industry attempts to bring a classic rock sound in the form of a new group, I can get into that. As of late, the automotive industry hit a home run by bringing back the older style vehicles in autos such as the Dodge Charger and Ford Mustang. Now, in thinking of all the markets that retro is popping up in these days, the last place one would expect to see it occur is in the area of technology. After all, who wants to go backwards in technology? Especially when technological improvements are made in order to speed things up and make life more efficient and organized. Do we really want to cut back on those features in today’s high-paced society? I realize that companies need to add a new spin to try and get ahead in the marketplace, but sometimes I think they just come up with the craziest and senseless things just to capitalize on this ongoing retro campaign. I saw this proven true just the other day while doing a little online shopping for a new cell phone.

Remember when the cellular phone first came out, and how large it was? Think Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell, although I can’t believe I just used that as a reference point. Anyway, the original batch of cell phones were not very pocket friendly, couldn’t hold more than a dozen phone numbers, and did not come equipped with an earpiece or headset. Fast forwarding to today, the cell phone can fit in your shirt pocket, has more memory than the first laptop computer, and offers a wide variety of bluetooth wireless earpieces to accommodate all of those who do not like the hassle of holding a phone to their ear while they talk. It is this advancement that has me puzzled as to what direction we are moving in regards to technology.

ThinkGeek (www.thinkgeek.com) has introduced a new bluetooth device that is going retro, simply calling it the Bluetooth Retro Handset. This wonderful new addition brings us back thirty years to the old-style phones that used to hang on our walls, that were only available in either yellow or putrid green, and typically came with a 40-foot cord extension so that one could move about the house and trip up their siblings. It also poses the thought of “Where the heck are we going to carry this new wireless cell phone attachment?” Imagine, walking down the street, talking on the more comfortable bluetooth retro handset, and when the phone call ends, you stop to open your briefcase or purse to place the bulky handset to rest until the next call. Doesn’t this completely void the idea of making cell phones more portable and less hassle to lug around? Not only is it not pocket friendly, but who wants to walk around looking like a phone repair man with the belt clip I am sure they probably offer.

Of course, I am not completely missing the boat, and do realize that in today’s culture, a lot of people use their cell phone as the main phone line both on the go as well as in their homes. For those people, maybe I could see an interest in this new product. That way, you leave the handset at home and get the feel for it while working around the house. With its 30-foot range, we are still limited to the rooms we can enter with the invisible bluetooth “cord”; unless of course we carry the cell phone in our pocket while talking on the headset, thus creating more to carry around. For those people that really want to go back in time and don’t like all of the advancements in technology, by all means I say go check it out. This is probably for you.

Hey, maybe I am the crazy one here, but I think they completely went overboard on this one. Don’t get me wrong, I am sure they will sell millions, and I will be considered the oddball for my opinion. But I feel that my opinion stands for something, and I am sticking to it. You know what they say, opinions are like…well, I will keep that one quiet for now.
