With all of the new ways to transport several GB’s on information from one computer to the next, it has made life so much easier to bring your important data with you for use virtually anywhere. However, with increased technological advances, the data files for most audio and video formats have grown in size as well as quality, thus preventing you from carrying as many files as you would like to. I mean wouldn’t it be great to have the ability to bring every movie you own to your next hotel visit, just in case you were in the mood to watch one of them? And to make it even better, how about if you didn’t even have to watch them on a computer and were able to enjoy even the high definition quality videos from any HDTV? I hate the fact that I typically end up watching downloaded video on a computer screen while I have a giant, mammoth-sized LCD TV in my family room. I know there are hook-ups you can purchase to transfer it from one to the other, but that takes time and energy that I just don’t have at the end of a long day. With this little device, the Mvix Pocket Sized HD Media Center, I can easily watch my downloaded HD video content on any HDTV I wish without the hassle or restrictions to a 15″ monitor.

Now, let me put the disclaimer out there first. This is just a companion to a 2.5″ Internal IDE Hard Drive; you actually have to go out and buy the hard drive separately, which kind of stinks. The features, however, more than make up for it. It works like any other ordinary USB storage device, making it simple to transfer data by the drag-and-drop method we have all grown accustomed to. And once you get all of your video transferred, you can crank it out to any HDTV and enjoy up to 1080i playback. The media center has the ability to connect up to any digital TV, and even comes with a small remote to control your saved programming. And you can also store all of your audio files and photos, too, for the ultimate media collection that fits in your pocket. The device is only as big as a PDA and yet carries hundreds of gigabytes, making this the smallest yet most packed media center around. So portable, you can now easily share all of your videos, tunes and photos with family and friends and not even have to huddle around the computer desk to do it.

The media center supports virtually every video and audio format out there, and even has a jukebox to manage your playlists. It is even compatible with all forms of screen sizes, so you can watch in original 16:9 widescreen, pan and scan, or the normal 4:3 full screen. Could this be the end of the iPod? Doubtful, but an interesting thought to ponder. Apple has come out with similar ways to enjoy your iTunes content on other devices. I guess this just ups the competition a bit. Hopefully the fact that you have to buy the hard drive separately won’t turn too many people off, because this looks like a great, easy way to enjoy your digital media. I know I’d have fun with it.

For those of you who have never experienced the sound quality of a Bose system, you need to go to your local electronics store and do so immediately. Forget reading the rest of this post, even, until you get back to your computer. And most likely, you will have one of these iPod docking stations in your possession when you do. With a wide variety of bargain basement iPod docks out in the market, you really have to do some research before you actually decide on which one to buy. While it is great that you can pick one up at your local discount store for twenty bucks, you will be so disappointed when you arrive home and hook it up, finding out that the radio in a 1970 Buick sounds better. If all you are looking for is to give your ears a break from the buds and get whatever sound you can out of your playlists, then that’s ok. But if you really want to rock out, you must consider the Bose SoundDock system for your listening pleasure.

I have experienced the sound of this system first hand, and I have to say “Wow!” I mean, for its size, you would not expect it to thump better than most full-sized stereos, but that’s what it does. It charges your iPod while playing, which is perfect for all night listening. Made to fit with any iPod out on the market, all you do it use the adapter, plug it in, and enjoy. You get a tiny little remote to control your playlists from across the room, and the dock is so slim and easy to fit in any spot in the house.

It is available in black or white, so you can coordinate with the original iPod colors. Now, you might be thinking “it doesn’t look like anything fancy” or “it cost $200!!??”, and I know how you feel, but the second you hear it you will pay every penny for it. Short of sounding like a Bose salesman, I would make sure this is the only iPod station used in my house. And no, I do not get any commission, so don’t bother asking. When I see a product worth the price it is going for, I tend to get excited about it.

If you are a TV buff like myself, sometimes you hate when you are on the road and can’t get access to your favorite shows. Hotels have TV’s, but what if you rely on your trusty DVR to capture your programming so you can watch it at a later date? Or, say you want to catch the Yankee game, but are stuck in a hotel in St. Louis for that dreadful four day conference. I have come across this dilemna on more than on occasion, and honestly now realize I am a true couch potato who is addicted to watching television. Thankfully, I am not alone out there, as we can see with the introduction of the Slingbox. The Slingbox works together with your broadband internet connection and your existing cable, satellite and DVR service, to bring you your programming wherever you are in the world (given there is internet access on your end). You plug the input of your set top cable box, satellite receiver or DVR into the Slingbox and SlingStream technology takes over.

This technology calculates a lot of factors that typically come into play when watching video through a broadband connection. The Slingbox uploads your TV broadcast into a live video stream on the internet. The video stream is adjusted based on the type of device plugged into the Slingbox. It reads whether you are pumping in digital cable, or analog signal which will be irrelevant in the near future. This adjustment gives you the most optimal viewing quality. There is then an adjustment made for the type of bandwith you are broadcasting on. And finally, a third adjustment is made taking into consideration the device you are viewing the programming on, be it a laptop, cell phone, or PDA. All of these modifcations will ensure that you get the best viewing quality possible everytime. and the mobile player you install on your device is fully controllable with an on-screen remote, giving you the ability to channel surf as if you were in front of your TV in the living room.

The low down on costs is horrible. The box costs $250, with no service fees or memberships to sign up for; it is a one time fee and that’s it. There is the additional cost per device you set up to receive the programming, which is a one time fee of $29.95. A little price, yes, but just think of all the fun you will have catching the game, news, or favorite TV drama in front of your laptop in a hotel, or at your desk, or on a PDA or mobile phone walking around the streets of the Big Apple. I say it’s worth it.

I swear that my children get a kick out of losing or hiding the remotes in my house. And it doesn’t help that everything needs a remote: the TV, DVD player, the stereo system. To make matters even worse, if you can’t find that remote with today’s technology a lot of electronic devices no longer include an override button on the front and are pretty much useless. I find this out every time I get five minutes to sit and watch the Yankees game, and yet can’t power on the cable receiver or change the channel. Oh I always find it, buried in the cushions of the sofa, underneath the toy box, in the toy box, or sometimes even upstairs in a room where the remote should never see (such as the bathroom). So for this upcoming summer gift to myself, I am going to purchase the Remote Buddy. Once you look at this thing and see what it can do, you will be ordering one for your house too.

Similar to the wireless phone networks you can now equip your home with, the Remote Buddy houses up to four remotes of almost any kind. And to add even more appeal to this little wonder, a cup holder sits at the end, allowing me to rest my beverage of choice when sitting back on the couch and killing brain cells. But what makes this a really great must-have for my family room is that it has a remote finder, so my little friends will never be lost again. I don’t know how they do it, and they don’t really say much in the ad, but through some sort of wireless synching it pairs the remotes up with “central command”. Now the kids will never hinder my television experience again, and I may get out of my thirties with some hair left on my head.

You can find this wonderful buddy through a quick google search, or go here where I stumbled onto it and see for yourself. The price isn’t bad, and is well worth it when you figure out all of the aggrevation you will be saving. Plus it’s always fun trying to outsmart the kids.

With the latest craze of mp3’s at the turn of the century, it is hard to remember back to when I used to sneak into my brother’s bedroom, swipe some of his vinyl records, and record them on a cassette tape labeled “mix”. I know, I am really dating myself. And if I think about it really hard, my kids will be saying that same thing about compact discs. Weird, huh? But the personal recording of these LP’s to a horrible sounding quality cassette was never deemed illegal. Or even taping your favorite single from the radio. Only when the technology got to be as perfect as those used in recording studios and record labels is when the government went into action, and now kids downloading a free copy of Dream On can get busted and thrown into the slammer. I think there are bigger fish to fry, like drug dealers and rapists, but hey who am I? Well, hopefully the new radio from Intempo, cleverly named Rebel, will restore the wild and crazy attitude of the youngsters in America today.

The Rebel is geared towards today’s technology, allowing you to record the most commonly played songs in mp3 format directly to your radio. How it determines which songs are the most played is a mystery at this point, and I am not sure we will ever know the answer to that one. But what I do know is that it tidies up the recording and edits it cleanly, eliminating the DJ speak and trailing few seconds of the preceding commercial, so you get pretty much just the song. I am sure in the editing process, you might lose a fraction of a beginning or ending second, but we can live with that, right? And with the mp3 format, it is a nice, crystal clear copy of the song that you can continue playing until you are sick of hearing it…just like a Top 40 station does.

Just be careful. After all, it is still probably considered illegal, but I haven’t seen anyone arrested for taping off the radio just yet. give it time, though. If they realize there is a dollar being lost somewhere, they will be sure to figure out a way to get it back. even if it means throwing a 7th grader in jail for 30 days when he can’t cough up the $1.2 million fine for sneaking a couple songs on his hard drive. Go ahead and be a Rebel.

For those of you who have no idea what Netflix is, stop reading this and go here. You can come back once you’ve boned up on your knowledge. Most people have seen their ads enough through online banners and are probably sick of it by now. We started using Netflix about three months ago in my household. All I can say is that the service is fantastic. My family tends to forget about returning DVD’s, and end up spending about $20 per movie by the time it gets back into the video store, so this works out perfectly. We are on the $8.99 a month plan, giving you 1 DVD at a time, but there is no limit for the month. There is a distribution center right in our area, so I get a couple of movies a week if I remember to drop it in the mailbox the following morning.

But the DVD’s are only a piece of the membership. My plan offers unlimited hours from the instant viewing library, which allows you to choose from over 10,000 movies and TV shows directly on your computer. I have spent the last few months hunched over my laptop, watching movies on my small 13 inch LCD screen like it was the newest technology on earth. Of course, it can give you such a pain in the back and neck. Luckily, they have just come out with a new set-top box for your TV to cure our aches and pains, and gives us the chance to watch these instant flix right in front of our big screen TV’s.

Made from Roku, the Netflix Player is the hub to get those movies from the Netflix instant library without having to fiddle around with the computer. It hooks up to your home network, either wirelessly or via an ethernet cable, and feeds off of your instant viewing queue on your membership account. Simply add movies from the library into a list, kick back, and watch them on the tube. Your computer doesn’t even need to be turned on. It is compatible with any TV and comes with several hook up options.

I can’t wait to get this for my house. At first glance, there are a few drawbacks. The content is not yet offered in HD, although it says the box does have that capability, so look for that a little bit further down the road. Plus, without a high speed internet connection, you are out of luck. Plus, you only have a choice of 10,000 movies and TV shows, but I believe they are boosting it to someday get closer to their 100,000 they offer on DVD. I am leery on how the picture quality will transfer to my television, as on my PC it is still VHS quality. Good thing is the 30-day money back guarantee, so I will try it out for a month and decide then. This will surely bring in more customers for the already #1 DVD rental outlet. With the competition through Apple TV looming, I think this is a sure thing for Netflix.

I want this! I want this so bad, I am dropping hints like a mad man around here for Father’s Day gift ideas. I guess I am like the ordinary male who marvels in the world of sports. Don’t get me wrong, there are women out there too who can hold their own, but I think men are just that much crazier. When you think sports coverage, automatically ESPN comes to mind. They have created what we know as sports coverage today. Done watching the game? Flip it over to SportsCenter to relive the highlights. Got a few hours to kill before kick-off? The crew at ESPN will cover the upcoming games to death. They feed us every statistic available, including how many touchdowns some guy threw after eating a bowl of corn flakes the night before versus ice cream. And we gobble it up, take it as gospel, argue when their wrong, and it becomes this whole routine. For years, I have started my morning off with SportsCenter. Then, on the ride to work, I flip it over to ESPN radio, and again on the ride home. I think I may be mentally ill, but I don’t even care. I love it and can’t get enough!

So this is what’s behind the strong desire for this amazingly awesome new technological must-have. The ESPN Ultimate Remote is the first and last remote you should ever consider. First of all, it is a universal remote, so you will no longer need one remote to turn on the TV, then the remote for the cable box, then another remote if you are planning on watching a DVD, and wait, don’t forget the remote for the surround sound stereo system. Talk about batteries! With this, you will be able to hook up everything to one single remote, ending your confusion and headaches (and creating even more confusion when grandma comes over to babysit). What makes this better than the average universal remotes is that it is a wireless remote with an LCD screen, and is equipped with a wireless network connectivity that will keep you connected as if you were working in the studio yourself.

Changing the channels is its least important feature. How about downloading content, keeping tabs on your fantasy league teams, getting up-to-the-second scores and highlights, info on all the games, statistics, league leaders, browse TV listings, text message your buddies, and even check the weather. And all this without the TV even being turned on. You simply add it to your existing wifi network, point at the device you want to control, and add it to your remote. You never have to leave your couch again. Of course, you may want to invest in a bedpan if you decide to take it that far.

I am only scratching the surface here. If you want to see more about it, or are seriously going to buy me, er…I mean somebody, one, check it out here at Amazon. I feel that this is THE device that brings my entire network together. If I had a zillion dollars, I would buy every guy I knew one of these. I have already printed out three different views of this product and placed them strategically on my wife’s nightstand, her pillow, oh and on the mirror in our bathroom. I hope she gets the hint. I still have to work on it, we only have a few short weeks left. And how perfect would this be for the rest of baseball season? And the playoffs? Oh then football season…man I don’t know if I can wait that long!

If you are like most people who keep up with today’s forever-changing culture, then you probably have some form of an iPod to conveniently carry around your favorite tunes wherever you go. Today’s line of iPods offer far more than their predecessors, enabling us to watch TV shows, full-length films and music videos to compliment the amazing sound it provides for our music library. The iTunes store offers a wide variety of music, and with the introduction of the video capability on its higher end models a few years back have been selling a good amount of hollywood blockbusters. This year, Apple has entered the on-line movie rental market, which is a great idea but can come with its limitations. For instance, you can only watch them on your computer or the small screen of the iPod. However, Apple does sell a wonderful device that allows us to tie all of the wonders of our home theater and computer systems for maximum enjoyment.

I was one of those skeptical consumers, wondering what was so great about renting movies from the iTunes store only to be able to watch them on my computer which has the sound quality of a 1983 Walkman. Sure, the iPod has much better sound quality, but the screen is so small I can’t exactly plan a movie night around it. Plagued with the absurd thought of abandoning my very expensive 57″ HDTV television and high-tech sound system, it didn’t take me long to hop online and visit Apple for some answers.

Being so into today’s high-tech gadgets, I am surprised I didn’t see this one sooner. AppleTV is the perfect device to integrate your computer network with your home entertainment system. In fact, it makes it possible to rent movies and TV shows from iTunes right on the TV, even if they are not stored already on your computer. All you need to do is connect the AppleTV device to your TV, along with your wireless computer network, and you can enjoy all Apple has to offer from your big screen. Still putting off installing that wireless network? No problem, there is also a network port in back to connect via an ethernet cable for those still-hardwired folks.

As far as content, you get more than you could ever need. In addition to the large database of available movie and TV show rentals, you also have access to a lot of free content, such as special HD video podcasts, YouTube videos, and can even view photos from popular sites like Flickr. And of course, you can still enjoy listening to your favorite iTunes, too! Whether it is stored already on your library or if it just came out today, you will never run out of videos to watch.

Videos range from free to $3.99, and are offered in standard digital or high-definition format. AppleTV is available with either a 40GB or 160GB hard drive for storing content locally, and supports most video and audio formats. This is a huge step for Apple, especially with competition such as Netflix offering on-line video rentals that are included in their monthly membership plans. Welcome to the new age of movie rentals. Don’t be surprised to see your local Blockbuster boarded up, because with access to all of Hollywood’s greats withouth leaving the house I feel the market has changed for the better. Go check this one out, and see if it makes sense to add it to your home network. I know I am.
