Sure, those little flash drives are one of the most effective, useful items going. We use them everyday for work, play, and everything in between, and would most likely be lost without them. But aren’t you sick of carrying them around in your pocket or digging through your briefcase every time you need one? This USB watch aims to provide you with the memory you need, and give you a functional watch at the same time.

Looking somewhat fashionable, the watch comes in either a 2GB or 4GB storage capacity, and acts as your average, everyday USB drive. When needed, just pop it off your wrist and plug it in. The built-in connector even keeps you from having to carry cables around with you, making this a truly convenient gadget. It works with pretty much any operating system, and works in plug and play style. And the watch actually works, too! Very lightweight, it operates with Japanese movement to ensure it will last more than a few months. The only thing you can’t do is get it wet, so unlike every other watch out in the market, this one is not water resistant at all. Which is good, because water and PCs don’t mix very well.

The only complaint I see with this watch is that it doesn’t look as sharp as a nice gold one. But what you can do is wear this on the days you think you would use it most, and switch over to the fancier model when you feel the need to. However, I think you will find that this is so useful you will end up making it your everyday watch before you know it. Sometimes total geek is more stylish anyway.

The market is really saturated with USB flash drives. This can’t come as a shock, because I am sure within 5 minutes down any electronics aisle, or a flip of a page in the weekly sales flyer, you have seen at least three different typres of USB drives on sale that all do the same thing. You really can’t do a lot of different things with the way they look, or how they are shaped, so it boils down to brand recognition and data storage space, right? Oh yeah, and the lower prices don’t hurt, either. Well, it looks like that is about to change.

The USBee flash drive is definitely as unique as you can get. First of all, it is designed to resemble a bumble bee. Its neat, flexible design is made of a silicon and aluminum to make it as damage proof as possible. A good selling point, especially with the newer drives boasting their near-indestructability. However, the jury is still out on leaving them in your pants pocket in the washing machine. Also, the black stripes are part of a cooling system, keeping your drive from overheating. To top it all off, the removable cap snaps on the back when in use. How great is that? I have lost numberous caps for these drives over the years by placing the cap somewhere and forgetting about it.

Now that I have you all excited, the downer is that these haven’t even gone into production yet. I know, they always make us wait for the good stuff. My guess is they want to hype up the product as much as possible and then feel comfortable about jacking up the price. But maybe I am wrong. I just think that this may be the start of some unusual looking, yet quality, flash drives.

I still remember my first swiss army knife my older brother handed down to me as a kid. I was always jealous of this one guy in my fourth grade class because he had one, and I forever begged my mom to get one for me. Of course trying to convice your mom to buy her nine year old son a knife is pointless, anyways. I get that now. But boy, how I wanted one for myself. And who wouldn’t? A pocket knife alone carried an amount of coolness in itself, let alone the fact that you are also walking aorund with a pair of scissors, a corkscrew, and a plastic, reusable toothpick at your fingertips, just in case you needed any of those things. Talk about the boy scouts “being prepared”. Short of a nuclear holocoust, with one of these in your pocket you were ready to cut a piece of string, pick your teeth, and open a bottle of wine in the same motion. Everything a nine year old boy would need, right?

So leave it to the techies of today, bringing in something new into the world of old standards. How can one improve the already amazing swiss army knife, you might ask? Well, ThinkGeek is at it again. I know I knocked them a bit in my prior post for bringing useless retro-feel gadgets into today’s high tech market, but that’s what these guys get paid for. Besides, this is one gadget I think they did a pretty good job at.

Let’s take a look at the bells and whistles of this newly revamped knife, shall we? First, and the most useful addition to the Swiss Army Knife is the USB flash drive. At 1GB, you can transport all of your important documents. You also get instant protection carrying it around with a knife, so forget all of that encryption nonsense. Not a bad choice for the corckscrew replacement. It appears that the toothpick was replaced by a ball-point pen, which is probably a good move seeing as the germs on the toothpick were not so great to harvest in your pocket. Finally, a red laser pointer has been added to top off the new look for 2008. Overall, it looks like the carriers of this knife today will be armed and ready for accessing their computer files anywhere they go, while having the ability to give presenations and making notes on the go. Plus, all the great features that the knife and screwdriver/file (still included, thank God!) have to offer.

With the official manufacturer on board, you still also get the great quality you expect. My Swiss Army Knife has truly got me out of a few jams over the course of life. This one will surely come in handy for life as I know it today. Maybe I’ll get one and tourment the cat with the laser beam. Or I guess I could use it to cut things; after all, it is a knife….but where’s the fun in that?

Remember way back when, to the days where the USB flash drives took over the marketplace as the best way to store information on the go? It eliminated the need for a floppy drive, made the invention of the ZIP drive seem irrelevant, and allowed users to store a million times more data in a fraction of the time. Whether it is on a keychain, a pen, or a simple and separate device, people’s important information was made more readily available for transporting from computer to computer. Unfortunately, this ease of portability has also increased the risk of theft or loss of our valued information. Sure, most flash drives now come ready with some sort of encryption, allowing users to enable a password feature to store their data in the hopes that if lost or stolen the perpetrator could not access their secret files. Of course in this day and age, hacking these types of storage devices are becoming more common, especially because of the lax security features most of these flash drives are supported with. In search of a perfect way to keep my portable information safe, I believe I have stumbled across the perfect little flash drive that comes with a Hollywood spy movie sort of feel to it.

Available now, the IronKey USB flash drive (www.ironkey.com) is one of the most secure devices for data storage on the market. Focusing on data protection, this drive contains a military-grade Cryptochip that offers amazing security by scrambling your data with a powerful encryption method. In fact, this encryption is so strong, that the IronKey is approved for use by the Department of Defense. And all you have to do is remember your password.

Sound too simple to offer effective data protection? Without entering the correct password, the IronKey will not connect to the computer. There is security software to prevent Trojans and password-guessing hackers from obtaining your password. After 10 unsuccessful attempts, the Cryptochip “self destructs”, permanently erasing both your encryption keys and important data. Self-destruction also occurs when one tries to physically tamper with the IronKey in the hopes to extract the data from your drive. Not to worry, though; every user can create an Online Security Vault to backup all of their data held on their IronKey in case it is destroyed, lost or stolen, and transfer it to a new IronKey drive. And even the online backup offers strong, government-type encryption to keep you fully protected. The IronKey also offers a great feature of storing your online website passwords securely. It protects you from phishing attacks by verifying the website is correct before entering your password. This is also a great way to fend off any keystroke logging attempts to try and steal your password.

Now, this is just scratching the surface. Visit their website (www.ironkey.com) for the full list of specs and details about this amazing flash drive. I highly recommend this drive to everybody that uses a USB flash drive to transport data. I am always working with highly sensitive information in my profession, and our office just ordered a dozen of these. Whether you are storing government secrets, account numbers, or you just don’t want anyone peeking at your fantasy baseball stats, this secure data storage device is perfect for anyone who values their privacy. After all, you don’t want to be that guy in the headlines who loses 4 million social security numbers because someone swiped his flash drive from the local Starbucks, do you?
